The iPhone 12 Pro Max is a smartphone that was designed, manufactured, and sold by Apple from 2020 to 2021 as part of the iPhone series. This iPhone has been introduced on October 13, 2020, released on November 13, 2020, and its price started at $1099.
The all-new iPhone features a Six-Core 3.0 GHz 64-bit Apple A14 Bionic processor with Quad-Core graphics, Apple M14 motion coprocessor, 6 GB of RAM, 6.7″ Super Retina XDR OLED Display, GPS, 5G data capability, dual-SIM support through a nano-SIM and an eSIM (Apple SIM), four colors; Graphite, Silver, Pacific Blue, and Gold, 128 GB / 256 GB or 512 GB of flash memory, Wi-Fi 6 – 802.11ax, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC for Apple Pay, Lightning port, nano-SIM slot, Three rear 12 Mpix cameras with Wide, Ultra Wide and Telephoto lens system with LiDAR sensor / 12 Mpix front camera with TrueDepth camera system for facial recognition called Face ID, three-axis gyro, accelerometer, Barometer, Qi and MagSafe inductive charging, and IP68 for water resistance and dust resistance.
Major upgrades over the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max include the addition of 5G support, the LiDAR sensor, the introduction of the MagSafe wireless charging and accessory system, the Apple A14 Bionic system-on-a-chip (SoC), high-dynamic-range video Dolby Vision 4K video recording at 30 or 60 fps, larger 6.7-inch and 6.1-inch displays on the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro, respectively, and the move to a base capacity of 128 GB from the prior base capacity of 64 GB while retaining the other storage capacities of 256 GB and 512 GB.
The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, like the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, are the first iPhone models from Apple to no longer include a power adapter or EarPods headphones found in prior iPhone models; however, a USB-C to Lightning cable is still included; additionally, this change was retroactively applied to other iPhone models sold by Apple, including the iPhone Xr, iPhone 11, and iPhone SE 2nd generation.
It is the first major redesign since the iPhone X, similar to that of iPad Pros since 2018 and the iPad Air 4th Generation. The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max feature a flat chassis, a design seen with the iPhone 4 through the iPhone 5s and the first generation iPhone SE. The notch size is similar to previous iPhone models, despite speculation about a reduction in width.
The bezels are around 35% thinner than the iPhone 11 Pro and previous models. The new design also comes with a ceramic-hardened front glass, marketed as Ceramic Shield, while the back retains the previous generation Dual-Ion Exchange strengthened glass. On the back is the same three-camera configuration found on the iPhone 11 Pro, but with larger apertures and an added LiDAR scanner.
A magnetic connector known as MagSafe is introduced on the iPhone 12 models, allowing accessories such as cases and charging cords to be attached to the rear of the device. Accessories can also be stacked together.
The devices support 5G cellular communications. This allows upload speeds of up to 200 Mbit/s and download speeds of up to 4 Gbit/s. However, only models sold in the U.S. support the fastest mmWave technology; those sold elsewhere in the world, including Canada, support only sub-6GHz frequency bands.
A new feature called Smart Data Mode enables 5G only when necessary to preserve battery life. 5G is not supported if both SIMs (eSIM and physical SIM card) are active. To use 5G, the user must manually disable one line.
This iPhone has been discontinued on September 14, 2021, and has been replaced by the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
