The Apple Time Capsule 2nd Generation is a wireless network-attached storage device that was designed, manufactured, and sold by Apple in 2009 as part of the AirPort Time Capsule series. The base station has been introduced on March 3, 2009, and its price started at $299.
The new AirPort Time Capsule features a Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000BASE-T), 500 GB / 1 TB or 2 TB of hard drive, Data rate up to 540 Mbps, compatibility with 802.11a/b/g and Draft-N protocols, guest networking, three LAN ports, possibility to connect up to 50 devices. It is marketed as a backup device designed to work in tandem with the Time Machine backup utility, introduced in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
The device includes a full AirPort Extreme (with 802.11n wireless, an Ethernet WAN port, and three Ethernet LAN ports) and Dual-band operation on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz simultaneously.
On July 30, 2009, Apple introduced the 2 TB version, and at the same time stopped producing the 500 GB version. Automatically the 1 TB version replaced the 500 GB version and its price is $299, the new 2 TB model replaced the 1 TB version, and its price remained at the same level of $499.
This Time Capsule has been discontinued on October 20, 2009.
