The Apple ProDOS 16 is a disk operating system developed by Apple in 1986, especially for the Apple IIGS computer. ProDOS 16 has been publicly released on September 6, 1986.
The ProDOS 16 was developed until version 1.6 was released on June 14, 1988, and later was succeeded by Apple GS/OS.
Apple ProDOS 16 is a renamed version of Apple ProDOS 8 and was released as a temporary solution to support the 16-bit architecture used in Apple IIGS. Almost two years later Apple released a dedicated operating system for IIGS called GS/OS.
Today Apple ProDOS 16 is 35 years old!
