Apple ProDOS 16: Release Details

In 1986, Apple released a new disk operating system, the Apple ProDOS 16. This system was specifically designed for the Apple IIGS computer and was publicly available as of September 6th, 1986.

The ProDOS 16 was under development for several years until version 1.6 was released on June 14, 1988. However, it was eventually succeeded by the Apple GS/OS operating system.

The ProDOS 16 was a renamed version of the Apple ProDOS 8 and was intended as a temporary solution to support the 16-bit architecture used in the Apple IIGS. It was not until two years later that Apple released a dedicated operating system for the IIGS, called GS/OS.

As of today, the Apple ProDOS 16 is 37 years old and still holds a special place in the history of Apple’s operating systems. Despite being succeeded by newer systems, it remains a significant piece of technology in the world of computing.
