Apple Mouse IIe Explained

On April 24, 1984, Apple introduced the Apple Mouse IIe, a pointing device that would go on to become a staple of the company’s product lineup for the next two years. Part of the Apple Mouse series, the Mouse IIe was designed, manufactured, and sold by Apple as a companion to the Apple IIe Platinum case.

The Mouse IIe was similar in many ways to the Macintosh mouse that had been released a few months prior. However, there were a few key differences that set it apart. For one, the Mouse IIe was available in a sleek platinum color that matched the Apple IIe Platinum case. Additionally, the Mouse IIe had a slightly modified design that was sleeker than the Macintosh’s blockier shape.

Another major difference between the Macintosh and the Apple IIe Mouse was the color scheme. The Macintosh mouse featured contrasting taupe accents on the mouse button and cable, while the IIe Mouse was uniformly the same color. Additionally, the IIe Mouse shared a dual-purpose port with gaming devices like joysticks. This meant that in order for the IIe to know what was plugged into it, the mouse had to send the appropriate signal.

Despite these differences, the Apple IIe Mouse carried exactly the same model number as the Macintosh version. However, despite its success and popularity, the Mouse IIe was discontinued on September 15, 1986. Today, the Apple Mouse IIe is 39 years old, a testament to the enduring legacy of Apple’s innovative design and technology.
